Some of us are a little crazy when it comes to our dogs. We buy them sweaters to wear in cold weather, we pay outrageous sums for the best dog beds, and yes, some of us cook for our dogs.

Sunday is a big cooking day at our house. I cooks several meals that I can eat throughout the week, and it’s the day of the week I cook up a big pot of something for the dogs.

They know when that’s happening because I use that one big pot in particular. They can spy that pot a mile away. They know the sound of it when it comes out of the cupboard.

Yes, they are spoiled.

I have friends who hunt, so this time of year I get a little donated meat for the doggies. While much of it ends up as a rice porridge, chock full of meat and veggies, I decided to break out of the mold a little and check out something new.

I recently came into possession of the heart, liver, and lungs of a harvested deer. I am not particularly fond of making a meal of deer organs for myself, but the dogs love it and it’s a great lean meat choice for them that’s just packed full of protein.

I decided to make them meatballs. Instead of just a couple of meals of something special throughout the week, they’ll get treats a couple of times a day; dog gourmet variety. They won’t complain, I assure you.

So to make these meatballs I ground up the heart, which came out to be about a pound and a half of lean meat.

To the meat I added:

  1. Two eggs
  2. 1 can of green beans (drained)
  3. 1 can of diced carrots (drained)
  4. 1 cup of bread crumbs (you can use oatmeal too)
  5. 1/4 cup beef broth

After mixing it all up real well, I formed  2″ balls with the mixture and placed them on a baking sheet, in a 350 degree-preheated oven, for 35-40 minutes.

You should refrigerate these once cooled. They’ll will keep for about a week in the refrigerator, except at my house; they won’t make it that long. (Did I mention my dogs are spoiled?)

You can add almost any vegetable to the mix, and use most ground meats, just make sure not to use meats high is fat content or veggies high in starch.
